Does Shakespeare sound better in Yiddish? Recorded live from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, historian Prof Joel Berkowitz, author of Shakespeare on the American Yiddish Stage and co-founder of the Digital Yiddish Theatre Project, takes us on a tour of Yiddish theatre’s longstanding and creative connection to the great works of the bard.

Moderated by ACJC Chair Prof Rebecca Margolis, who brought us the excellent 5-part Yiddish Oyfn Ekran lecture series, this fascinating discussion about the history and future of Yiddish Shakespeare also features Kadimah Yiddish Theatre Artistic Co-Directors Evelyn Krape and Galit Klas, KYT ensemble member Josh Reuben and Yiddish literary maven Danielle Charak AM. As we endure the COVID “plague on (all) our houses”, listen to the KYT’s recent recordings of four brief Yiddish Shakespeare Monologues from Hamlet, Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice and Sonnet #18. The event is in English with a touch of Yiddish.
