Starring Evelyn Krape and Toby Bender & band. Musical Direction by Tomi Kalinski & Toby Bender.

This tribute event to Arnold Zable’s beloved novel creatively combines dramatic monologues, audiobook soundbites and live performance to transport you straight back to the streets of 1950s working class and immigrant Carlton – with the Kadimah at its Jewish heart.

Musician Toby Bender and his six-piece Latin band recreate the sounds of local dance halls and the famous Mokambo Orchestra. Evelyn Krape’s powerful narration evokes the optimism tinged with sorrow of a changing world. With English narration and Yiddish songs, this event is a powerful celebration of survival – and a reminder that “scraps of heaven” can be found everywhere.

Durkh A Modne GlozThe event marks the launch of both a newly recorded audiobook of the 2004 novel, as well as the year-long celebrations of the 110th Anniversary of the Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre and National Library, Australia’s oldest continually operating Jewish cultural organisation.

The audiobook, read by Evelyn Krape, was produced during successive COVID lockdowns in 2020-21, working closely with author Zable, producers Bender and Marty Lubran, musical director Tomi Kalinski and musician Gideon Preiss.
