The COVID-19 scourge has had some unexpected cultural upsides. Moving out of the bush and onto the internet, Yidish Sof Vokh, the much-loved annual Yiddish retreat, is now freely accessible online this weekend to anyone who wants to practise their conversation, play games, sing, dance or listen to an interesting talk about art and culture – all in Yiddish. One particular bonus of this year’s remote edition is a fabulous, wide-ranging international conversation with New Yorker Zalmen Mlotek, Artistic Director of the National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene and world-renowned authority on Yiddish folk and theatre music.

Chatting to Yiddish performer, teacher and longtime friend Freydi Mrocki, Zalmen discusses his major project, the acclaimed Yiddish production of Fidler Ayfn Dakh, his inspirations and influences, including the lasting impact of advice to pursue a career in Yiddish music from his mentor, the legendary composer, conductor and cultural icon Leonard Bernstein.

Together with our Yiddish-loving partners, the Kadimah is honoured to co-present Yiddish Oystralye’s Yidish Sof Vokh – In Der Heym as this week’s matone. Check out the program below and don’t forget to pre-register for the sessions with limited audience capacity, including the conversation and reading groups, singing, dancing and youth activities.
