Sender Burstin had barely set foot in Melbourne in 1928 when he launched into community engagement: librarian at the Kadimah, inaugural member of the Melbourne Bund, one of the founders of I.L.Peretz School, and later a makher in Jewish Welfare and the Jewish Board of Deputies.
His remarkable life and legacy are celebrated in a new documentary by filmmaker Esther Justin, launched on August 14, 2022. With never-before-seen archival footage, and interviews with some of those closest to him, Justin’s film explores the impact of this committed Yiddishist and fabrente (fervent) socialist – which continues to this day.
This event is the fourth in the Kadimah Goldene Kayt (golden thread) series where we remember, pay tribute to, and reconnect with the extraordinary pioneers and cultural architects of Yiddish Melbourne (previously Yankev Waislitz, Yosef Orbach, and Nachman & Rivke Gryfenberg).
